Everything You Need to Know About EPDs

As regulations tighten and expectations around sustainability increase, more companies are turning to Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) to stay transparent and competitive.

What is an EPD?

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a standardized document that provides transparent, verified data about a product’s environmental impact across its entire lifecycle—from raw materials and manufacturing to use and end-of-life. A valid EPD must be third-party verified and published by a recognized program operator. It follows international standards, such as EN 15804 and ISO 14025, and is based on a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and predetermined parameters (Product Category Rules - PCR), ensuring consistency and credibility in sustainability reporting.

Are EPDs required?

In the past, EPDs were primarily used as a competitive advantage. Today, they are increasingly required by regulators, procurement bodies, and green building standards. New EU legislation such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is accelerating this shift, making EPDs a central part of compliance and product transparency.

How are EPDs used?

For manufacturers, this means EPDs are no longer just a “nice to have”—they’re becoming essential for doing business in a regulated, sustainability-focused market. Alongside new rules like the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) is also driving demand for accurate, standardized environmental data.

EPDs are used to:

  • Prove environmental performance with objective data
  • Support green building certifications like LEED, BREEAM, and others
  • Meet procurement requirements in both private and public projects
  • Build credibility with customers, regulators, and stakeholders
  • Stay ahead of EU regulations, including CSRD, CBAM, and CPR

Why are EPDs so complex?

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are valuable for demonstrating a product’s environmental footprint, but producing them isn’t easy. Traditional EPDs require detailed data collection, complex Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) modeling, and rigorous review—often involving consultants, specialized tools, and significant manual effort. This makes the process slow, expensive, and difficult to scale. For many companies, especially those without in-house sustainability expertise, managing EPDs becomes more of a burden than a benefit, creating delays and draining resources that could be better spent on innovation or growth.

How can you simplify EPDs?

EandoX is built to automate and simplify the EPD creation process. It tackles the core challenges—complex data, evolving regulations, and the need for frequent updates—through a structured, user-friendly software. By streamlining these tasks, EandoX frees up time and resources, allowing businesses to focus on what really matters: sustainability, innovation, and staying ahead in a changing market.
